Dr Pram Sirimanna

Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeon

MBBS BSc (Hons) PhD FRACS

Dr Pram Sirimanna is an Australian-trained specialist hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon. His expertise is in the care for tumours and diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile duct and duodenum. He has a particular interest in complex cancers of the pancreas and liver, including cases requiring advanced surgical planning and techniques.

Originally from the United Kingdom, he completed his medical degree and Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours at Imperial College London. He subsequently moved to Australia as a junior doctor and completed a PhD at the University of Sydney, focusing on the development of novel approaches to surgical training and assessment.

Dr Sirimanna undertook specialist training in General Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2021. He then completed four years of advanced subspecialty fellowship training in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal and liver transplantation surgery, including completing the Australian & Aotearoa New Zealand, Hepatic, Pancreatic & Biliary Association (AANZHPBA) Fellowship Training Program.

During these four years, he trained at the highest volume hepatobililary, pancreatic and liver transplant surgery centres in the country including Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. This combined hepatobiliary/pancreatic and transplant surgery training provided extensive experience in advanced pancreatic and liver resections, including operations that may require resection and reconstruction of major blood vessels. He also developed expertise in minimally invasive approaches to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, including laparoscopic major liver resections and robotic pancreatic procedures such as the Whipple procedure and distal pancreatectomy.

Following completion of his fellowship training, Dr Sirimanna was appointed as a consultant hepatobiliary, pancreatic and liver transplant surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Dr Sirimanna has a strong interest in research and education, particularly in surgical training, patient safety and improving outcomes in surgery, and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. He has authored book chapters and peer-reviewed publications in international journals, presented nationally and internationally, and been awarded prizes, scholarships and research grants for his work. He also supervises higher degree research students and has a passion for training the next generation of surgeons.

After working as a consultant in Queensland, he and his family returned to Sydney, so their son could grow up close to extended family. Family life remains central to his values and strongly influences his commitment to supporting patients and their families through their challenging diagnoses and treatment journeys.
